A Prayer for Virginia Beach

On Friday afternoon, an indiscriminate shooting took place in a Virginia Beach municipal building, killing 12 people and sending at least four others to the hospital. Together we pray for those who are in mourning and who have been directly affected by this evil:

God of life, whose presence sustains us in every circumstance, we seek the grounding power of your love and compassion in the wake of the predatory evil witnessed this week in Virginia Beach. We open our hearts and ask You to hear all that we may struggle to put into words.

We pray for the families and friends of the twelve whose lives were cruelly taken from them. We pray for those who survived but whose lives may be changed forever. We give thanks for the courage of all first responders and for the heroism of the police officers who ran toward danger rather than away from it. In our outrage, grief, and sorrow, turn our hearts to the movement of Your Spirit, to serve You in the advance of Your reign of peace.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our healer and our Light, we pray, Amen.
